NBA Friday Slate Preview: Odds, Trends, Notable Shifts

Bet NBA with William Hill, America’s #1 sportsbook.

The NBA’s best and brightest are out in full force for tonight’s biggest matchups. The two players with the lowest odds in William Hill’s 2020-21 MVP futures square off. Additionally, the defending NBA champions take on one of the most exciting young teams in the league.

At 7:40 p.m. ET/4:40 p.m. PT on ESPN, the Mavericks travel to Milwaukee to take on the Bucks. The Bucks have the NBA’s best point differential per game (+11.4), while the Mavericks are fifth (+5.0). In terms of star power, it doesn’t get much better than Luka Doncic vs. Giannis Antetokounmpo. Doncic is the current MVP favorite at William Hill at +280, followed by Antetokounmpo at +450.

The Bucks opened at -6 for this showdown at William Hill and are now up to -8, while the total sits at 229. Milwaukee is also receiving 60% of the total number of tickets and 86% of the total dollars wagered among all spread bets vs. Dallas. William Hill bettors are also aligned on the total, as the over is reeling in 80% of the total number of tickets and 62% of the total dollars wagered.

Later in the night, the Lakers and Pelicans meet up in Los Angeles at 10:10 p.m. ET/7:10 p.m. PT on ESPN. The Lakers currently have the best record in the NBA at 10-3, while the Pelicans look to snap a four-game losing skid that has dropped them to 4-6.

New Orleans is set to get back Zion Williamson, who missed Wednesday’s clash with the Clippers due to health and safety protocols. The second-year sensation is tied with Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell for the 13th-lowest MVP odds at 40/1. The Pelicans, however, have ruled out Lonzo Ball (knee) and have listed Eric Bledsoe (eye) as questionable.

The Lakers are one of two teams to have two players reside in the top 10 for MVP odds, with LeBron James tied for sixth at 10/1 and Anthony Davis is ninth at 17/1. Only the Nets (Kevin Durant at +850 and James Harden at 18/1) can boast the same claim.

Los Angeles was originally listed as a 10-point home favorite before dropping down slightly to -9.5. The Lakers are the biggest NBA favorite tonight, with their moneyline price being -475 and the Pelicans at +380 to pull off the outright upset.

In the other games on tonight’s slate, a few of them have had notable spread and total shifts. Besides Mavericks at Bucks, one other spread has swung by multiple points, with the Grizzlies going from +3 to +1 against the Timberwolves in Minnesota. Two totals have seen drastic shifts as well, with Hawks at Jazz jumping up 4.5 points (223.5 to 228) and Clippers at Kings dropping 4.5 points (231 to 226.5).

One other interesting total is on the board, and it comes in the Knicks at Cavaliers face-off. In today’s NBA, it’s quite rare to see a total below 200, yet the number in this one is all the way down to 196.5.
