William Hill First to List Odds with Wise Dan 4-1 Favorite
NEW YORK CITY (Friday, April 25, 2014) – Two-time defending Horse of the Year Wise Dan made history when he opened as the 4-1 favorite in the first-ever Eclipse Awards 2014 Horse of the Year future bet odds listed today by William Hill, the operator of 100 sports betting locations across Nevada.
Other favorites (with opening odds) include last year’s Champion 3-Year-Old Will Take Charge (5-1), three-time Santa Anita Handicap winner Game On Dude (6-1), defending Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Mucho Macho Man (7-1), current Kentucky Derby favorite California Chrome (8-1) and 2013 Belmont Stakes hero Palace Malice (8-1).
The State of Nevada Gaming Control Board approved the 2014 Horse of the Year wager Tuesday for all licensed books in the state. The setting of odds is at the discretion of each book. Future bet wagering on Horse of the Year will conclude on Nov. 7, six days after the Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Santa Anita Park near Los Angeles.
Horse of the Year will be announced at the 44th annual Eclipse Awards ceremony on January 17, 2015, at Gulfstream Park Racing & Casino, located outside Miami in Hallandale Beach, Fla.
“We thank William Hill for pushing this initiative and applaud the State of Nevada for approving an entertaining wager that gives fans and bettors a new way to engage with the top North American horses in training throughout the season,” said National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) President and CEO Alex Waldrop. “The Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year is the most prestigious award in American racing and now the sharpest racing fans can share in the glory if they back the right horse.”
The new wager was conceived when Cot Campbell, founder and managing partner of the Dogwood Stable syndicate that owns Palace Malice, contacted William Hill US CEO Joe Asher about betting on his prized colt to be named Horse of the Year. Palace Malice already has wins in two important handicap races to start his 4-year-old campaign.

Eclipse Awards are bestowed upon horses and individuals whose outstanding achievements in North America have earned them the title of Champion in their respective categories. Those awards are voted on each December by approximately 275 media, racing secretaries and Equibase chartcallers representing the NTRA,Daily Racing Form and the National Turf Writers And Broadcasters (NTWAB). Finalists, announced in early January, are determined in each category by voters’ top three selections, using a 10-5-1 point scale. Eclipse Award winners, including Horse of the Year, are determined solely by first-place votes. Voting is audited by Louisville, Ky., accounting firm Strothman and Company.
The Eclipse Awards are presented by Daily Racing Form, The Stronach Group and the Breeders’ Cup and owned and produced by the NTRA. The Eclipse Awards are named after the great 18th-century racehorse and foundation sire Eclipse, who began racing at age five and was undefeated in 18 starts, including eight walkovers. Eclipse sired the winners of 344 races, including three Epsom Derbies.
Denver QB Manning, Seattle CB Sherman figure to be popular on next Sunday’s wagering menu
LAS VEGAS (January 24, 2014) – One of the most popular players in pro football history will also be one of the favorite players for bettors to back in next Sunday’s championship game. Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning’s performance against Seattle can now be wagered on in a variety of ways at William Hill Race & Sports Book, with the most locations in Nevada to place a bet on the big game.
The Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks will meet at 3:30 p.m. PT on Feb. 2, and William Hill is offering its signature extensive wagering menu for the season’s final – and biggest – game. Open for wagering as of Friday morning are more than 400 ways to bet next Sunday’s game – including odds on several team and individual outcomes within the game. The menu won’t stop there, though, as many more propositional wagers – or “props” – will be offered throughout the upcoming week.
All props will also be available via the William Hill Mobile Sports wagering app, which allows bettors to play on the go via their smartphone device from anywhere in the state.
Early wagering on the game is largely in favor of Denver, with the legendary Manning as the driving force behind those betting opinions. Each week this season, Manning props offered by William Hill were a hit, and there will be more than ever on Feb. 2 as he chases his second ring, including:
- Will Manning throw for over or under 323.5 yards?
- Will Manning throw for over or under 2.5 touchdown passes?
- Who will have more: Manning touchdown passes or Arsenal/Crystal Palace total goals?
“Betting on the big game nowadays mostly means betting the props,” William Hill Director of Trading Nick Bogdanovich said. “With that said, we expect no one to be a bigger draw in this game than Peyton Manning. He’s had the greatest single season ever by a pro quarterback, and now tries to polish it off against the No. 1 defense in the league. You couldn’t ask for anything better if you’re looking for action on the game.”
The William Hill trading team so far has produced 227 wagers on next Sunday’s game, and we even asked our employees and the public – via Facebook and Twitter – what they would like to see. Many suggestions involve Seattle star cornerback Richard Sherman, who has made quite a bit of news over the last week.
Props involving the top Seahawks defender include:
- Yes or no: Will Richard Sherman record an interception?
- Who will have more: Sherman total solo + assisted tackles or Juventus/Inter Milan total goals?
InPlay wagering will also be offered, available at all 100 William Hill locations throughout Nevada, and via the Mobile Sports app. The action never stops with InPlay wagering, as the point spread, total and money line will adjust throughout the game. A full list of locations and mobile info is available at williamhill.us.
Monday night finish helps net customer a $109,290 payday – on his birthday
RENO (November 20, 2013) – Bob Martini’s 71st birthday is one he will surely never forget. His day started off unlike any other on Tuesday, as he headed to his favorite sports book – the Club Cal Neva – and cashed out for $109,290 as the lone winner in the Week 11 William Hill Pro Football Progressive Contest.Out of 8,717 entries into last week’s contest, which featured a record jackpot, Bob had the lone live entry heading into Monday night’s New England-Carolina showdown, with the Panthers as his selection to win. The Carolina victory was sealed with a controversial finish, as a flag for pass interference on Carolina in the end zone on the game’s final play was picked up, denying New England one more shot at the winning touchdown.
“I was thinking they’d have the ball on the one-yard line with one play and no time left – I think the referee did the right thing,” Martini said with a laugh. “I didn’t know I had the only live ticket heading into Monday night … and that was probably a good thing, because I probably would have laid some money going the other way. I still did sweat some.”
Martini is a long-time customer at the Club Cal Neva book, and owns a bar just down the street from the casino. He said he has no major plans for the money just yet.
