U.S. Soccer: Odds Posted for NWSL Challenge Cup, MLS is Back Tournament

Soccer leagues have been relaunching all across the world in the past few of months, and the U.S. will soon have a couple of its own as well.

The National Women’s Soccer League and Major League Soccer will each have tournaments featuring the best teams in the country. 

The 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup kicks off this Saturday from Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, Utah. The back-to-back NWSL champion North Carolina Courage are 3/2 favorites to win the eight-team tournament. 

The Chicago Red Stars, led by U.S. Women’s National Team stars Julie Ertz and Alyssa Naeher, are next at 7/2, followed by the Portland Thorns at 5/1 and Utah Royals FC at 7/1. 

On the men’s side, the first-ever MLS is Back Tournament is slated to begin on July 8 in Orlando. The winner out of the 26 teams competing will secure a 2021 CONCACAF Champions League spot. 

This tournament will consist of 54 matches, with a group stage, round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and an Aug. 6 final to cap it off. 

Los Angeles FC leads the way at 9/2 odds to win the inaugural event after setting MLS records in 2019 for most points and biggest goal differential in a single season. The club is led by dynamic winger Carlos Vela, who made history of his own last season by scoring a record 34 goals. 

New York City FC and the Seattle Sounders are tied for the second-lowest odds at 8/1, with Atlanta United close by at 10/1. FC Cincinnati and Nashville SC are the biggest longshots at 125/1.

Executive Order 2020-41 states in pertinent part that “During the duration of the Gubernatorial Disaster Proclamations, the provisions in the Sports Wagering Act, 230 ILCS 45/25-30(f), 25-35(f), and 25-40(i) requiring in-person creation of a sports wagering account at a facility authorized pursuant to the Act in order to participate in sports wagering offered over the internet or through a mobile application, are suspended.”
