Playoff Preview: Odds, Trends for Canadiens vs Lightning Game 1

Bet NHL with William Hill, America’s #1 sportsbook.

Will the Lightning become the second back-to-back Stanley Cup champions since 2000? Will the Canadiens win Canada’s first Stanley Cup since 1993?

Each team is just four wins away from ending the season on a historic note, starting with tonight’s Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on NBCSN.

The Lightning won it all for the second time in franchise history in 2020, and now will look to repeat for the first time since the Penguins did it in 2016 and 2017. Tampa Bay still has a long way to go to catch the Canadiens’ record 23 Stanley Cups, with Montreal’s last one coming in 1993 over the Kings.

The Lightning opened as heavy -215 chalk at home for Game 1, though their price has since dropped. Now Tampa Bay is a -200 favorite, with the Canadiens residing at +175 to steal one on the road to start the series. The total has been set at 5, with the over at -125 and the under at +105.

The majority of the tickets and dollars are on opposite teams as of now for Game 1. The Lightning have the advantage with 71% of the total number of tickets for all moneyline bets, whereas the Canadiens have the edge with 54% of the total dollars wagered. That is highlighted by one New Jersey bettor who placed $60,000 on Canadiens +175 for a total potential payout of $165,000.

William Hill bettors have been more aligned wagering on the total thus far, with the under securing 57% of the total number of tickets and 73% of the total dollars wagered.

There are other ways to bet on the Stanley Cup as well. The Lightning are -280 for the series at William Hill, while the Canadiens are +240.

Bettors are rolling with the underdog in this market, with the Canadiens capturing 75% of the total number of tickets and 57% of the total dollars wagered among all Stanley Cup Final series futures. A Nevada bettor put $20,000 on Canadiens +230 to emerge victorious in the series for a total potential payout of $66,000.

William Hill Nevada has had Conn Smythe Trophy (playoff MVP) odds up the entire Stanley Cup Playoffs. Canadiens goaltender Carey Price is the +120 favorite, followed by Brayden Point (+200), Andrei Vasilevskiy (+250) and Nikita Kucherov (+500).
