Pro Football Preview: Bettors Backing Denver to Go Over Win Total

The expectations are high for the Broncos in Year 2 under Vic Fangio.

After finishing 7-9 last season, Denver made several key offseason acquisitions—including signing tailback Melvin Gordon and trading for cornerback A.J. Bouye and defensive lineman Jurrell Casey along with selecting wideouts Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler in the draft.

“People are really buying the Broncos,” said Nick Bogdanovich, Director of Trading for William Hill US. “It’s a strong division, but people think Drew Lock showed enough last year and can take the leap in Year 2. Usually there are a couple teams that surprise each season, and Denver has the potential to be one of them.”

William Hill opened the Broncos’ win total at 7.5, with the under favored at -120 and the over at even-money odds. Denver is still at 7.5, though the over is now priced at -145 with the under at +125.

The reason behind the change? The Broncos’ over has attracted 89% of the total dollars wagered, which leads all NFL teams. Denver’s over has captured 84% of the tickets as well, which only trails Buffalo over 9 (93%), Arizona over 7 (90%) and Seattle over 9.5 (85%).

The Broncos have also drawn the two largest 2020-21 NFL win total bets taken thus far at William Hill. One Nevada bettor placed $10,000 on Broncos over 7.5 (-140) for a total potential payout of $17,142.85, while another Nevada bettor put down $9,756 on Broncos over 7.5 (-125) for a total potential payout of $17,560.80.

Despite the optimism for Denver going over its win total, that hasn’t translated to wagers on the team lifting the Lombardi Trophy in February.

“Not a lot of love with Broncos Super Bowl futures,” Bogdanovich said. “They’re in the bottom half of tickets written. Based off how people are betting Denver, there’s a lot of confidence for them reaching 8 or 9 wins, but not quite 10 or 11.”

The Broncos have generated 2% of both the total number of tickets and the total dollars wagered for all Super Bowl 55 futures bets at William Hill. Specifically, Denver ranks 17th for total number of tickets and 20th for total dollars wagered among all teams.
