2021 Pro Football Draft: Third Overall Pick Odds Shifts, Latest Trends

Bet NFL with William Hill, America’s #1 sportsbook.

It’s officially 2021 NFL Draft week, and we’re just three days away from the Jaguars being put on the clock at the No. 1 slot. The intrigue starts at No. 3, though, as the 49ers will decide upon their next potential franchise player.

William Hill Nevada released odds for which player will be the third overall pick on April 10. Since then, there’s been some major shifts. In fact, one player who was previously the favorite now has the third-lowest odds.

Alabama’s Mac Jones opened as the -225 favorite to be the third pick on April 10, followed by Ohio State’s Justin Fields at +260 and North Dakota State’s Trey Lance at +375. It only took one week for the favorite to flip, as Fields (-130) was edging Jones (even-money odds) with Lance still at +375.

Jones stood alone atop the board again on April 25, as he was displayed at -160. Fields’ price had risen to +175 and Lance closed the gap a bit at +230. Today, Jones has been lowered even more to -240. For the first time, Lance took over the second position at +190 with Fields given his longest odds yet at +500.

How have William Hill bettors been wagering on this market, though?

“The most tickets is on Fields, second-most on Jones then Lance,” said Nick Bogdanovich, Director of Trading for William Hill US. “Most money is on Jones by a mile, twice as much as Lance. It’s been the one prop that’s been the most popular so far for us, that’s for sure.”

Fields has captured 29% of the total number of tickets to be selected third, with Jones (23%) and Lance (22%) neck-and-neck right behind. Yet, Jones has commanded a whopping 52% of the total dollars wagered. Lance is next at 23% of that category, and Fields has attracted 18%.

For further context, Fields getting taken with the third pick is the most popular 2021 NFL Draft bet at William Hill Nevada by total number of tickets while Jones being selected third is the most popular 2021 NFL Draft bet at William Hill Nevada by total dollars wagered.
