Pro Football Week 8: Early Odds Report

Bet NFL with William Hill, America’s #1 sportsbook.

We’re approaching the halfway point of the NFL season, and Week 8 certainly is filled with intriguing matchups. William Hill has odds up for 13 of them, with Cowboys vs. Eagles currently off the board.

There’s already been some major line movement, including on the largest spread at William Hill so far this season.

The 0-7 Jets opened as 22-point underdogs last week at the defending champion Chiefs for this upcoming week’s battle, yet that line has dropped 2.5 points to Jets +19.5. The Jets covered their first game of the season last weekend, as they closed as 9.5-point home underdogs before falling 18-10 to the Bills. But is there a different reason why this spread is heading toward New York’s direction?

“The professionals thought originally that the Chiefs might not care enough in this spot to cover this big of a number when we opened this at 22,” said Nick Bogdanovich, Director of Trading for William Hill US. “They just think they’ll get in, get the victory and get out. I know one thing, the book will need the Jets for a small ransom. At least [Sam] Darnold is much better than [Joe] Flacco. He’s young and will still make some stupid mistakes every now and then. But the Jets still got completely outplayed by the Bills.”

Another spread that has moved 2.5 points from its original number is a rivalry showdown between the Steelers and Ravens. Despite being the NFL’s last undefeated team, Pittsburgh opened as a 6-point road underdog in Baltimore. Yet, that line continues to fall, as the Steelers are now +3.5.

Pittsburgh has also taken the largest Week 8 wager as of now at William Hill, as one Nevada bettor placed $11,000 on Steelers +4 (-110) for a total potential payout of $21,000.

“I don’t understand the move here,” Bogdanovich said. “The professionals obviously think that the Steelers are pretty dead even with the Ravens. The spot’s just much better for Baltimore. Pittsburgh just came off a war of all wars in Tennessee, and Baltimore had a bye. So this game sets up for Baltimore perfectly.

“There’s always a ton of Ravens money, so I don’t know if the public will be betting completely blindly on the Steelers. Early move was all professionals. I think when push comes to shove, we’ll need the Steelers.”

The only other spread to shift by multiple points from its opener is an AFC West showdown. The Chargers were listed as 1-point road favorites at William Hill on Sunday night, and now have gone all the way up to -3.

Meanwhile, three totals have changed by at least two points as well: Rams vs. Dolphins (49 to 46), Falcons vs. Panthers (51.5 to 49) and Saints vs. Bears (47 to 44.5).
