Pro Baseball Win Totals: AL East Odds, Trends

Bet baseball with William Hill, America’s #1 sportsbook.

We’re less than a month out from the first pitch of the 2021 MLB season, so it’s time to start digging into William Hill’s regular season win totals. Our first stop is the American League East.

The Yankees have William Hill Nevada’s second-highest win total at 96, only trailing the defending World Series champion Dodgers at 103.5. Yet, New York’s win total has dropped from its 97 opener.

Two other AL East teams have seen their win total decrease from its original number: the Rays (88.5 to 86.5) and Orioles (64 to 63). The only bigger win total drops in all of baseball than the Rays belong to the Athletics (88.5 to 86) and Cardinals (88 to 85.5).

On the other end of the spectrum, the Red Sox (77 to 79) and Blue Jays (86 to 87) have had win total increases since William Hill released them on Feb. 18. The Red Sox are tied with the Royals (71 to 73) for the biggest rise in their win total in all of baseball.

So every AL East team has experienced an odds shift, but how have William Hill bettors been approaching their win totals?

The Rays’ win total has been the most popularly bet under in the division, as it has attracted 94% of the total dollars wagered. In fact, among all of baseball, they’re tied with the Rangers (68.5) for the most lopsided percentage on a win total under in terms of total dollars wagered. Tampa Bay’s over has received 52% of the total number of tickets, which is the lowest percentage for any AL East team.

One William Hill New Jersey bettor placed $2,200 on Rays under 88 (-110), and then another $2,200 shortly after on Rays under 87 (-110). Each of those wagers has a potential total payout of $4,200.

Meanwhile, the Blue Jays and Red Sox win totals have been two of MLB’s most popular overs at William Hill as of now. For total dollars wagered on an over, only the Mariners (71.5) at 99%, Angels (83.5) at 99% and Tigers (67.5) at 98% surpass the Blue Jays (97%) and Red Sox (96%).

Toronto’s over has generated 86% of the total number of tickets as well, which is tops in the AL East and the sixth-highest percentage in MLB—the Mariners’ over ranks first in that category at 96%. Additionally, Boston’s over has captured 71% of the total number of tickets.

William Hill bettors are most divided on the Yankees and Orioles. New York’s over has reeled in 64% of the total number of tickets, however the under has grabbed 79% of the total dollars wagered. Baltimore has followed a similar pattern, as its over has the advantage with 63% of the total number of tickets but its under has the slight edge with 52% of the total dollars wagered.
