Monday Night Pro Football: NE vs. NYJ Preview

Two bitter AFC East rivals will face off tonight at MetLife Stadium to conclude Week 9 of the NFL season.

The Patriots are currently 9.5-point road favorites over the Jets at William Hill on Monday night. New England opened at -7.5 and was briefly down to -7 (-120) before the news that Jets quarterback Sam Darnold would be out for this game. The Patriots were as high as -10 today until the line dropped by half a point.

“The market spoke with this line move,” said Nick Bogdanovich, Director of Trading for William Hill US. “There has to be some difference between Darnold and [Joe] Flacco. Flacco at this stage of the game is below average, he looked horrible in his first start. Maybe he’ll be better this go-around after getting some reps under his belt. But to me, this current number looks high. It’s weird to see this version of the Patriots as a near double-digit favorite on the road, even if the Jets are godawful.”

William Hill bettors are content fading the winless Jets against the spread, even at a high number. The Patriots are getting 64% of the total number of tickets and 63% of the total dollars wagered for all spread bets against the Jets.

The moneyline price in this battle has shifted as well, with the Patriots jumping from -330 to -440 and the Jets going from +270 to +360. New England also has the advantage in this market, as the Patriots have received 67% of the total number of tickets and 86% of the total dollars wagered.

The two largest total potential payouts for this contest as of now at William Hill, though, are on wagers that have come in on the home underdog. A Nevada bettor put down $8,500 on Jets +10.5 (-130) for a total potential payout of $15,038.45. Meanwhile, a New Jersey bettor thinks Gang Green can enter the win column tonight, as a $4,000 bet was placed on Jets +360 moneyline for a total potential payout of $18,400.

There’s also been some movement on the total, as it has risen 1.5 points from its 41 opener and now resides at 42.5. Despite the shift moving in the direction of the over, William Hill bettors aren’t aligned on the total.

“We’re pretty dead even on the total,” Bogdanovich said. “But we’re coming off a weekend where there were a ton of overs, we got hammered by them. These two teams are so low-scoring though that even the over bettors aren’t running to get to the window.”

The over has a small edge in total number of tickets at 54%, however the under is squeaking by for total dollars wagered at 51%.
